چکیده

We report on the absolute calibration of amicro channel plate (MCP) detector, installed asdetector in a Thomson parabola spectrometer. Thecalibration delivers the relation between a registeredcount numbers in the CCD camera (on which the MCPphosphor screen is imaged) as a result of the impact ofan ion beam onto the MCP. The particle response ofthe whole detection system was evaluated by usinglaser accelerated ions with proton energies up to 3MeV and carbon ion energies up to 16 MeV. In orderto obtain an absolute measurement of the number ofions incident on the MCP detector, slotted CR-39track detector was installed in front of the MCP. Thesignal registered on the MCP due to ions propagatingthrough the CR-39 slots is compared to the number ofparticles counted on the adjacent CR-39 stripes afterthe etching. The calibration of the response of MCPhas been extended to higher energy ions and protonson the basis of a simple model validated bycomparison with the calibration data. This sensitivedetection set-up makes it possible to measure in asingle laser shot the ion spectrum in absolute terms.

Enhancement of maximum attainable ion energy in the radiation pressure acceleration regime using a guiding structure.

Radiation pressure acceleration is a highly efficient mechanism of laser-driven ion acceleration, with the laser energy almost totally transferrable to the ions in the relativistic regime. There is a fundamental limit on the maximum attainable ion energy, which is determined by the group velocity of the laser. In the case of tightly focused laser pulses, which are utilized to get the highest in...

Heavy ion acceleration in the radiation pressure acceleration and breakout afterburner regimes

We present a theoretical study of heavy ion acceleration from ultrathin (20 nm) gold foil irradiated by high-intensity sub-picosecond lasers. Using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, three laser systems are modeled that cover the range between femtosecond and picosecond pulses. By varying the laser pulse duration we observe a transition from radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) to t...

Radiation-pressure acceleration of ion beams driven by circularly polarized laser pulses.

We present experimental studies on ion acceleration from ultrathin diamondlike carbon foils irradiated by ultrahigh contrast laser pulses of energy 0.7 J focused to peak intensities of 5x10(19) W/cm2. A reduction in electron heating is observed when the laser polarization is changed from linear to circular, leading to a pronounced peak in the fully ionized carbon spectrum at the optimum foil th...

Spectral Broadening of Ions Accelerated by a Radiation Pressure Driven Shock

Laser driven ion acceleration has been the focus of considerable research efforts since multi-MeV energies were first demonstrated. Most experiments use solid state laser pulses focused onto thin foil targets. However, recent progress in CO2 laser technology allows for the creation of intense pulses at lambda ∼10 μm. The longer wavelength permits the use of low density targets. In these conditi...

Issues in Radiation Pressure Acceleration

Radiation Pressure Acceleration by circularly polarized laser pulses has been proposed and widely investigated theoretically as a promising scheme for efficient generation of ions. In particular, the use of ultrathin targets may allow to reach energies per nucleon beyond the GeV range. The first, recently reported experiments appear to confirm the basic mechanism and i...
